OpenAI Will Train Your Small Business on AI. That's the Easy Part.

Jason Oglesby

By Jason Oglesby · July 24, 2026

OpenAI just launched a ChatGPT for small business program. Webinars, in-person academies across the country, startup guides, and discounts on tools like Shopify, Intuit, and Slack. All of it running on GPT-5.6 and aimed squarely at the businesses that have been watching the AI wave from the shore.

I'm glad they did it. Lowering the barrier for small business is a good thing, and OpenAI has the reach to do it at scale. Ten million people are already using ChatGPT Work and Codex. That number is going to climb.

But here's the part nobody at the launch event will tell you. The training was never the hard part.

A Workflow Built in a Day Is a Demo

OpenAI is proud of a number from its earlier academies: 78% of participants built a functional AI workflow in a single day.

That sounds like a win. On its own, it isn't.

A workflow you build in a day is a demo. It runs once, in a room, on a clean example someone picked because it works. Then you take it home, point it at your actual business, and it falls apart. Not because the AI is bad. Because the inputs are a mess.

The demo used one tidy spreadsheet. Your real customer data lives in three places and half of it is out of date. The demo assumed a clear process. Your process lives in one employee's head and changes depending on the day. The demo knew what "done" looked like. You've never written it down.

None of that is an AI problem. All of it is the reason your AI won't work.

The Tool Was Never the Bottleneck

This is the thing I want every small business owner to hear. You are not behind on AI because you missed a webinar. You're behind because the boring foundation underneath the AI was never built.

Clean data. Documented workflows. A clear definition of the one job you want done. Those are unglamorous, and no academy can hand them to you in an afternoon. They take a week of honest work and a willingness to look at how your business actually runs, not how you tell people it runs.

Give a messy business a more powerful tool and you get a faster mess. GPT-5.6 will execute a broken process beautifully. It will just do it at scale, which means when it's wrong, it's wrong everywhere at once.

More Tools Won't Save You Either

The program comes with discounts and integrations across Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian, and Wix. Useful tools, all of them. But watch the reflex they trigger.

The instinct, when AI feels overwhelming, is to buy your way to competence. Add another integration. Connect another app. Stack another subscription on top of the pile. It feels like progress because you're doing something.

It isn't progress. Every tool you bolt on is another surface that has to be fed clean data and maintained by someone. Ten connected apps running on a chaotic foundation is not ten times better. It's ten times more places for the chaos to leak out.

Access to AI is not your advantage anymore. Ten million people are already using these tools. Your competitor down the street can sign up for the same program you can. What you do with it is the only thing left that's yours.

Start With the Workflow That Costs You Money

So don't start with the tool. Start with the wound.

Pick the one workflow that's actually costing you: the invoices that go out late, the leads that never get a follow-up, the quotes that take three days to build. One. Not five.

Then do the work the academy can't do for you. Write down every step of that workflow, start to finish, the way it really happens. Find where the data lives and clean it up. Decide, in one sentence, what a good outcome looks like. Only then do you point ChatGPT at it.

That's Prioritize and Execute. You find the highest-impact problem, you focus everything on it, you solve it, and you move to the next one. You don't try to AI-enable your whole company in a day because a webinar made it look easy.

Take the Program. Just Know What It Can and Can't Do

Sign up for the OpenAI program. The training is genuinely useful and the partner discounts are real money. Send your team. Build the demo.

Just don't confuse the demo with the system. The businesses that win with AI this year won't be the ones who attended the most academies. They'll be the ones who did the boring prep first, so the tool had something solid to stand on.

OpenAI can teach you to use the hammer. It can't decide what you're building.

That part's on you. And it's worth doing right.

Want Help With the Hard Part?

You might catch the irony. I just told you a workflow thrown together in a day is a demo, and now I'm pointing you at a four-hour workshop. Here's the difference, because it's the whole point.

We don't build you a demo on a clean example. We take one real workflow from your business, with your real data, and we do the unglamorous prep together: map the steps, clean the inputs, decide what done looks like. You don't walk out with a finished company. You walk out with Claude doing one real task instead of a canned one, and the method to run the same play on the next workflow yourself. That's the start of the real work, done right, not a shortcut around it.

That's our Put Claude To Work workshop. Pick the day that fits your life: a Wednesday, August 12, or a Saturday, August 15. Join us in person in Johnson City or live online, whichever works. It's $299 a seat, and space is limited.
