I respect the intent. The check clears, the photo goes up, everyone feels good for a week. Then Monday comes and the nonprofit is still doing the same thing by hand that ate its afternoon last week. The money helped. The work didn't change.

We're doing something different.

Appalachia Advances is our community investment process at Ergon Insights. Every month, we take one small organization in our region and automate one business process for them, end to end, at no cost. Not a strategy deck. Not a list of recommendations. A working system that runs after we leave.

We Build It. You Keep It.

Here's what the month looks like. We pick one organization, we sit down and agree on exactly one repetitive process worth killing, and we build the automation that kills it. About twenty hours of our labor goes into it. When we walk out, the thing works and it's yours.

That last part matters. A lot of help in this space is advice, and advice is cheap. It puts the hard part right back on you. We don't hand you a plan for what you should do. We do the work and leave you the system.

No Equity. No Contract. No Catch.

I know how a free offer sounds, so let me be clear about the terms.

No equity. We don't take a piece of your organization.

No contract. You aren't signing up for anything that follows you.

No future purchase obligation. We're not building a free demo to trap you into a paid one later.

The only thing we ask is that you let us tell the story: what we built and what it changed. You review anything we publish with your name on it before it goes out. If you aren't comfortable with it, it doesn't run. That's the whole deal.

Who This Is For

Appalachia Advances is for organizations in the Appalachian Highlands: Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Northwest North Carolina. That's our home. We're based in Johnson City, Tennessee, and this is the ground we want to help.

Three kinds of organizations qualify: nonprofits, churches and faith organizations, and small businesses. If your team is small and there's a task that eats hours every week that a machine should be handling, you're exactly who we built this for.

How It Works

Apply. Tell us about the repetitive work. What it is, who does it, how much time it burns.

Selection. We choose one organization each month, and everyone who applies hears back either way. No black hole.

Scoping. Before we build anything, we agree on the process and what done looks like. Clear target, clear finish line.

Delivery. We build it, hand it over, and then document what we did publicly so the next organization can see what's possible.

There's no deadline. The form is open. If we don't pick you this month, you stay in the pile for the next one.

Why We're Doing This

I wrote that Appalachia gets technology last, and that it doesn't have to be that way anymore. This is me putting our own hours where my mouth is.

The barrier for a small organization was never desire. It's time and money. Most of these teams are already stretched thin, and the person who would build the automation is the same person answering the phone and running payroll. So the boring, repetitive work never gets fixed. It just gets absorbed, week after week, by people who have better things to do.

We can fix one of those every month. So we will.

And we document each one in public, with the organization's blessing, because the point isn't just to help one team. It's to show every other small business, church, and nonprofit in these three states what's actually possible when you stop treating automation like something reserved for companies with an IT department. Most of them think this is out of reach. It isn't. We want proof they can point to.

This isn't charity in the write-a-check sense. It's the thing we're actually good at, pointed at our own community, and given away. One organization, one process, one month at a time.
